Jeffco says to submit the form to the Assessor's Office by July 15 of the first year you seek the exemption; it applies to the following year's tax statement. Denials are mailed by August 1 and can be appealed.
The exemption usually carries over each year, but a surviving spouse must reapply after the original applicant dies. Jeffco gives the example that a $150,000 taxable value would be reduced by half under the 50%-of-$200,000 rule.
