Seniors and disabled veterans can instead get a 75% refund (SAFESR) or a refund that freezes their tax at a base-year amount (K-40SVR). All residential property also has $75,000 of appraised value exempt from the statewide school levy.

Does Kansas have a homestead exemption?

Not one that lowers your home's value for all taxes. Kansas uses refund programs instead, plus a $75,000 residential exemption from the statewide school levy.

Which refund should I file?

Check all three. The Department of Revenue's free WebFile software automatically picks the largest refund among Homestead, SAFESR and K-40SVR.

When do I file?

Between January 1 and April 15 of the year after the claim year.

Do I have to reapply for the homestead exemption in Kansas every year?

These are refund claims filed each year with the Department of Revenue, not with the county.
